Vicodin is just one of the increasingly abused Opiates. Since Opiates work on the body and brain in the same way as opium - the basis for heroin and morphine - they have the same potential for addiction as those better known opiates.
Doctors often prescribe Opiates for pain with little regard for their addiction potential. The Director of a California treatment center notes that out of 100 patients in the program being treated for Opiate addiction, virtually all of them became addicted while first receiving the opiate as a painkiller for a legitimate medical condition.
Rush Limbaugh claims to have become addicted to the "timed-release" opiate Oxycontin, while being treated for a back condition.
Recovered addicts have become re-addicted when doctors prescribed opiates for childbirth or trauma pain without checking for previous addictive history.
